Keep the Relationship: Per-Domain Unsubscribes + Goals

Let someone leave one list without losing them everywhere—and stop sequences when they buy.

Per-domain unsubscribe is simple. If a reader leaves Newsletter A, they can still get Newsletter B if they asked for it. You keep the relationship they want. Complaints drop. Trust goes up. Over time, that means more people stay on the lists that fit them—and more of your emails get read.

Respect choice without losing the reader

Many of us run more than one local list (city news, food, weekend events). In the past, one unsubscribe could remove a person from everything. That felt harsh and it hurt reach.

With per-domain unsub, people only leave the list they don’t want. They still get what they asked for elsewhere. It’s fair, and it keeps your audience warm.

Stop sequences when someone buys (Goals)

Add a simple goal to your workflow. When a person buys (or hits your chosen tag), the workflow ends for them. They stop getting “buy now” emails after they already paid. That’s respectful.

It also avoids discount confusion and keeps the customer happy. You can follow up later with value instead of repeats.

Simple rules that keep lists healthy

  • One promise per domain. Each newsletter should feel clear and focused. Readers know what they signed up for.

  • Let people choose. If they only want food or only want city news, that’s fine. Keep the door open for both.

  • Tag interests from clicks. Use link clicks to learn what people like, then send more of that. It’s helpful and lowers complaints.

  • Mind the pace. If opens slip, slow the send a bit or tighten the topic. A calm list performs better.

Weekly workflow check (5 minutes)

  • Look at the main workflow. Is the purchase goal set and working?

  • Skim recent opt-outs. Are they leaving one list but staying on others?

  • Scan last send. Any link with high clicks? Tag it and plan a follow-up.

Why this works: Readers stay where they get value. When you honor choice and end sales emails at the right moment, trust grows. Trust leads to higher opens, more clicks, and steady revenue—without burning your list.
