Letterman AI: Auto-Subscribe Across Publications: Settings, link language, and pacing |
Turn on the optional toggle, use plain link text, and keep sends calm when someone ends up on two lists |
What it does
In Letterman AI, when this optional setting is on, a reader who clicks from Publication A into an article that lives on Publication B that reader can be automatically subscribed to Publication B automatically. It routes people by interest and lowers our cost to grow each list.
Where to turn it on
Open the publication’s settings and enable the auto-subscribe checkbox. It’s per publication, so we control it for each list. We can turn it off any time.
How to say it in the link
Auto-subscribing is not against the rules so long as the reader can easily opt out if they don't want to be on the new list. However, if you want to be more transparent, we use plain words. “Full story on our Food site (you’ll join the food list).” Clear text can help set the right expectation and improves click quality. It also stands to reduce the chance of complaints.
Pacing when someone is on two lists
If a reader joins food and community, we stagger sends by a day or two and avoid sending the same story back-to-back. Each list keeps its own promise, and the inbox stays calm.
Quick checks
Bottom line: Auto-subscribe is powerful when we pair it with clear link text and gentle timing.
